So someone has asked: "Do we really need an International Drivers License?" And that is awkward for us to answer... Rarely, if ever, will you be asked to produce it... But, it's exactly the same as asking; "Do I need a Driver's License here in the United States?"
Legally, yes you need one if you're going to be driving... If for some reason you have interaction with the police while you were driving, they could ask to see it... And you're legally required to have it... The last we've heard, the fine for not having it varies by police departments and regions, but runs between 100 - 300 Euro and they can require you to pay it in cash on the spot..
Know that we, (Adventures To Tuscany) don't require it, and we won't ask you for it, but the Italian government does want you to have it if you're actually driving the car. Also your rental car company could possibly ask to see it... (ours never has) . But suffice it to say that, as your Tour Operator, we are legally required to tell you that you need it, if you will be driving a car... And we would be negligent if we told you that you don't need it. So we just always get ours; it takes about 5 minutes & $20 at your local AAA office...
